Initial operations of the HOG began in April of 2000 when the company leased 177 miles of track? from the Georgia Department of Transportation.? The original?portion of the system operated was a 68 mile segment between Preston and Rochelle Georgia as the balance of the leased line, consisting of 68 miles from Rochelle to Vidalia Georgia and 42 miles from Preston Georgia to Mahrt Alabama, remained out of service.
In 2000 funding provided by the State Legislature allowed HOG to rehabilitate and reopen the line between Rochelle and Vidalia Georgia, extending its service area to 136 miles.
In 2004, an acquistion of the former Ogeechee Railway Company allowed the HOG to expand north from Vidalia to a new interchange point with the Norfolk Southern Railroad (NS) at Midville Georgia.
Since its beginning the HOG has won numerous safety awards, and in 2000 recieved the annual "Short Line Marketing Award" for inovations in marketing and customer service
Today the HOG is a viable and industry recognized railroad spanning over 200 miles of track and serving a broad array of customers.? The HOG is in a unique postion of providing interchange service to both NS and CSXT, and has shortline interchanges with Georgia Central Railway at Vidalia and the Georgia Southwestern Railroad at Amercius Georgia.
New industries continue to find outstanding sites and recognize the ability of HOG to provide outstanding rail service to thier facilities.? With the growth in new companies, expansion projects of existing plants and the continued support of its family of customers, the HOG will continue to remain a strong transportation provider for those it serves today and for those who will come in the future.
